What is Jamu Juice?
Jamu juice is a traditional Balinese medicinal drink made from natural ingredients such as herbs, spices, flowers, roots and bark. The word ‘jamu’ means ‘herbal medicine’ in Indonesian. This medicinal drink is typically made from fresh turmeric together with other herbal ingredients, citrus fruits and sweetened with honey.
Do you Have Jamu Juice Hot or Iced?
Jamu juice can be served hot or cold so it’s a great drink to enjoy in the summer or the winter. I love jamu juice cold, over ice with a drizzle of honey and a squeeze of fresh lime juice. Feel free to warm it up for a soothing hot cuppa on chilly days.
Can I use Ground Turmeric Instead of Fresh Turmeric?
You can absolutely swap ground turmeric for fresh turmeric. The taste of fresh turmeric compared to ground turmeric will be slightly different. Usually fresh turmeric has more of a delicate sweeter taste, while ground turmeric can sometimes be more bitter. To use fresh turmeric instead of ground turmeric, use 1 tablespoon of ground turmeric per 1 inch piece of fresh turmeric. This recipe requires a 2 inch piece of turmeric and therefore use 2 tablespoons of ground turmeric. Of course, use less turmeric if you prefer a lighter tasting jamu juice.
What is Masala Chai?
Masala chai has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for centuries due to the health benefits of the warming spices. The herbs and spices in masala chai are perfect to complement the flavours of a traditional jamu juice.
