What Jello (or Jelly) to use in These Matcha Jello Shots?
I have tried out this recipe with both plain gelatine and boxed lime jello. Unfortunately, the plain gelatine version never turned out very well. Actually it was a disaster and turned into a horrid yucky gloopy mess. Boxed lime jello is the way to go for this recipe!
I used a packet of lime jello and swapped out of 1/2 a cup of water for vanilla vodka. I would recommended that whatever brand of jello you decide to use, follow the package instructions and switch 1/2 a cup (4fl oz) of water for your chosen tipple.
Matcha Green Tea
Matcha is a green tea made in Japan. Traditionally, matcha is used in a spiritual tea ceremony. The way that this special type of tea is grown, is by placing a shade over the Camellia sinensis plant for around 4 weeks. The new shoots which have been grown under the shade are then hand plucked before being minimally and carefully processed. The shade helps increase chlorophyll and amino acids which in turn creates new shoots. These shoots are less astringent in taste and bright green in colour. All very important in producing the finest matcha. To make the matcha powder, the leaf is ground very slowly to ensure that no heat is made during the grinding process. The leaf needs to retain it’s striking green freshness.
Matcha can be used in many different ways, mixed in many ways and used in lots of various recipes. Read more: different ways to use matcha green tea.
How to Make Matcha Jello Shots From Scratch
To make these matcha jello shots from scratch, firstly, you will need to mix your jello/jelly according to the package instructions. I’ve tried this with plain gelatin and it was a horrible mess so I would recommend a box of lime jello. Swap half of the water for vodka, whisk in your matcha powder and pour into shot glasses. Allow to set and sprinkle crushed candy canes over the top when you are ready to serve.
INGREDIENTS (Serves 12)
2 Tablespoons of Green Tea Matcha Powder
1/2 Cup (4fl oz) of Vanilla Vodka
1 Package of Lime Jello/Jelly
4 Candy Canes - Optional
METHOD
Firstly, prepare the jello as per the package instructions and switch 1/2 cup of cold water for vodka.
Next, whisk in the matcha powder and pour the jello into 12 shot glasses.
Place in the fridge for around 6 hours or overnight.
Once set, crush up the candy canes and sprinkle on top of the jello shots. Enjoy :)
TIP: Crush and add the candy canes just before serving, as the candy canes will melt once put back in the fridge.
