Toppings
Feel free to add any of your favorite toppings. Add ice cream, chopped nuts, caramel sauce and whipped cream too. If you are serving to guests, you could have a dessert station so that your guests can load up their own pears with their own toppings. For a slightly healthier dessert, try a dollop of thick Greek yogurt, a drizzle of maple syrup and a handful of walnuts.
What Tea Works Best for Desserts
I would suggest using a strong black tea such as Assam or English breakfast tea for this recipe. For extra aromatic spiciness use a Masala chai. If you are feeling adventurous, try poaching these pears in hojicha tea. Hojicha is a special Japanese green tea that has a unique roasted and smoky taste and aroma.

Which Fruit is Best for Poaching?
I like poaching pears for this recipe, however, you can try poaching lots of different types of fruit such as apples, peaches, nectarines or plums. It’s great to experiment with the flavors.
Do I Have to Peel Pears Before Poaching?
Yes, I would recommend peeling your pears before poaching them. Peeling your pears will ensure that they become soft and soak up as much of the sweet tea and vanilla flavors and aromas as possible.
How to Make Poached Pears with Black Tea and Sweet Vanilla
Making these sweet tea and vanilla poached pears from scratch takes around 30 minutes to do and it’s so simple. Firstly, brew the tea, add your sweetener of choice (maple syrup/honey/agave/sugar), vanilla and pinch of salt. Add your pairs and allow to gently simmer for about 25 minutes. Remove from the hob and serve the pears warm with your favorite toppings. Always enjoy dessert with a hot cuppa!
INGREDIENTS
6 Tea Bags or 6 Heaped Teaspoons of Black Tea
4 Ripe Pears - Peeled
1 Vanilla Bean Pod
1/4 Cup (8 Tablespoons) of Maple Syrup
Pinch of Salt
METHOD
Firstly, brew the black tea in 2 cups (16fl oz) of freshly boiled water. Allow to steep for 3-5 minutes before removing the tea.
Pour the steeped tea into a small saucepan. (Check the saucepan snugly fits 4 pears first)
Cut the vanilla bean pod lengthwise, scrape out the seeds and add the seeds and the bean to the steeped tea in the saucepan.
Add the maple syrup and a pinch of salt.
Bring the tea mixture to the boil. Once boiling, turn down the heat to a gentle simmer.
Carefully add the pears, ensuring that they are completely covered by the tea mixture.
Simmer on a really low heat for around 25-35 minutes or until the pears are soft.
Serve warm with your chosen toppings.
