Smoothie Bowls
You can make any chai latte you wish for the base of this chunky monkey smoothie bowl, however, I would totally recommend making a batch of my favorite coconut chai lattes and freezing them into cubes. If you haven’t frozen any cubes but are wanting to make a smoothie bowl like right now, you can go ahead and make it by pouring in a cup of cooled chai into the mix. Just remember that the more liquid that you add, the less ice cream like the finished smoothie bowl will be. The less liquid you add will result in a thicker smoothie bowl.
For added goodness, I love adding a scoop of protein powder and a scoop of collagen protein too. I love vital proteins collagen protein and I love plant based protein powder as I avoid dairy products. If you prefer to side step the protein powders, I would suggest a tablespoon of cacao/cocoa powder as an alternative.
I don’t have a high powered blender, my Nutribullet doesn’t like chunky ingredients without added liquids. To use a blender to make a smoothie bowl you will need something really high powered like an all singing all dancing fancy Vitamix. However, my food processor does make the most amazingly smooth smoothie bowls.
Is This Chunky Monkey Smoothie Bowl Actually Healthy?
Smoothie bowls can actually be very healthy depending on what goes in them. It’s worth noting that some smoothie bowls are quite high in calories because some ingredients such as chia seeds and nuts are naturally high in calories. So the answer to this question is yes, smoothie bowls are healthy due to the wonderful whole foods in them, however, if you are counting calories, it’s best to double check what exactly goes in. That’s why I love making my own chunky monkey smoothie bowls, I get to control exactly what goes in.
Why is my Chunky Monkey Smoothie Bowl Watery?
Adding too much liquid will make your smoothie bowl watery. The less liquid you add, the thicker it will be. That’s why I like making mine in my food processor. If you are making a smoothie bowl in a blender, you may need to add a little bit of liquid at a time so that it can blend properly. The more liquid you add, the more watery it will become.
Can you Save This Chunky Monkey Smoothie Bowl?
I would recommend eating the smoothie bowl right away as they do tend to melt and go a little mushy. If you would like to prep a large batch of your chunky monkey smoothie bowl and save for later, you can store portions in freezer safe containers without the toppings. When you next have a smoothie bowl craving, you will need to leave the portion on the counter for ten minutes or so to soften before adding your favourite toppings and enjoying.
Should I Make my Smoothie Bowl in a Food Processor and a Blender?
A food processor is generally used for keeping foods solid, making purees and some chop and grate foods. Blenders are a little different and generally used for making foods into liquids. I find it easier to make this smoothie bowl in my food processor rather than in my blender because making a smoothie in a blender acquires adding extra liquid and then it turns into more of a smoothie than a smoothie bowl. If however, you have a really high powered blender, it is possible to make a thick smoothie bowl.
What can I use to Make my Smoothie Bowl if I Don’t Have a Food Processor?
If you want to give this recipe a try but you don’t have a food processor, you can use a blender instead. Depending on how high powered your blender is, you may need to add more milk or if your blender is like mine and needs quite a bit of liquid, then you may want to add the cooled chai latte without turning it into ice cubes. The end result will likely be more smoothie like than smoothie bowl like but it will still be delicious!
