A Little Bit About Matcha

Matcha green tea is a special type of Japanese powdered green tea. ‘Ma’ means powdered and ‘cha’ means tea. This type of tea is grown and processed in a particular way. Matcha comes from the Camellia sinensis plant, the exact same plant that produces all other types of tea. Other kinds of tea from the tea plant include white tea, oolong, green and black tea.

Matcha is a great tea to use in many different ways and in many different recipes. Because matcha is in powdered form, it can easily be incorporated into soups, cakes, pastries and in smoothies just like this pina colada smoothie recipe. There are many ways to mix matcha with or without a special bamboo whisk and mixing bowl. The traditional whisk and bowl are known as a chasen and chawan.

The Health Benefits

Matcha is well known for it’s wonderful health boosting benefits including free radical fighting antioxidants. Green tea may help with allergies. Green tea, especially Japanese green tea such as matcha contains a compound known as methylated EGCG which contains strong anti-allergenic effects. Matcha may even aid in weight loss and matcha may make you poop more!

What Ingredients are in a Pina Colada?

The popular piña colada cocktail was first invented in Puerto Rico and traditionally contains pineapple juice, coconut cream and white rum. This cocktail is dreamy for sure but not the healthiest of drink choices so I created a lighter version packed full of fruit with an added star ingredient, matcha green tea. The flavours of matcha and coconut work perfectly together.

Feel free to add a shot of white rum or coconut rum with a squeeze of lime juice for an alcoholic frozen pina colada. Add a wedge of pineapple and a glace cherry on top to garnish.

Tips for Making this Matcha Smoothie

  • Frozen fruit: I would highly recommend using both frozen banana and frozen pineapple in this recipe to make a really thick indulgent smoothie. You can use fresh fruit but note that your smoothie will be less thick than when using frozen fruit.

  • Coconut milk: Use coconut milk from a carton rather than from a can. Coconut milk is the best type of milk to use for this recipe for a more coconutty taste. Alternatively, use any of your favourite type of milk including cow’s milk or plant based.

  • Yogurt: A dollop of yogurt helps to add creaminess and texture without added calories of using cream. Feel free to use any type of yogurt including greek, regular or plant based yogurt.

  • Toppings: Toppings are purely optional. Top your smoothie with whatever your heart desires including whipped coconut, coconut flakes, a wedge of pineapple or a pretty glace cherry for a fun cocktail vibe.
