What is Milk Tea?

Milk tea means any type of tea with added milk. Drinking black tea with milk is Britian’s favourite kind of tea! Other types of popular milk teas include Tawainese bubble tea, Japanese Hokkaido milk tea and Hong Kong milk tea. Tea lattes are also a type of tea made with frothed or steamed milk.

Can you add Brown Sugar to Tea?

Oh yes! Adding brown sugar to creamy tea, just like this recipe, gives such a wonderful rich molasses flavor. Many teas are far too delicate to have with milk and sugar, but strong bold black teas such as English breakfast or Assam tea go well with a splash of milk and a sprinkle of sugar or dash of syrup.

Tips for Making the Best Hot Brown Sugar Milk Tea

  • Black tea: Always use strong rich black tea for this milk tea recipe. Stronger black tea types include English breakfast or Assam. You can also use a masala chai blend for extra spicy warmth.

  • Hot Milk: Always warm up your milk before adding it to your tea. You can either warm on the hob or in the microwave. You can also steam or froth your milk.

  • Brown sugar: Using brown sugar in milk tea gives it a really decadent caramel like flavour. However, you can use any type of sweetner. Maple syrup also works well to provide a rich taste.

  • Simple syrup: Flavoured simple syrups are great for adding more oomph! Try using a good drizzle of this pumpkin spice syrup made with brown sugar and spicy chai tea.

  • Steeping: To correctly brew the perfect cup of tea, ensure that you don’t over steep it. If you prefer a stronger tasting tea, add more tea and not more time. Steep your tea for 3-5 minutes maximum. Too much time will allow too many tannins in your brew which will result in a not so nice bitter tasting tea.

  • Teapot: Just like using warm milk, it is also a good idea to warm up your teapot before hand. Simply add a cup of freshly boiled water to your pot and swirl for 30-60 seconds. Discard the water and begin to brew your tea.

  • Tea cozy: If you have a tea cozy, use it to cover your steeping tea pot to keep in the heat. The helps keep the steeping tea at the optimum brewing temperature.

  • Top it: Add whipped cream and an extra sprinkle of brown sugar for unnecessary indulgence!
