What is Earl Grey?

Earl grey tea is a popular blended black tea that is flavored with bergamot oil. Bergamot oil is a fragrant oil made from the rind of the Italian bergamot orange. It’s a beloved kind of tea in Britain and comes in as the UK’s second favourite brew after English breakfast. There are lots of theories on how this famous tea was first created. It’s likely that it was accidentally created by storing porus black tea next to bergamot oil in which it soaked up the zesty aromas that this tea is so famous for. This accidental creation became a hit. Gradually, over time the tea has been blended and flavoured in a certain way to create the Earl grey that we know and love today.

Does Earl Grey Tea Actually go With Chocolate?

Surprisingly, Earl grey tea pairs perfectly with flavors of chocolate, especially extra dark chocolate! The blended black tea with the citrusy flavors of bergamot are wonderful together with the chocolate. I love a sweet milky tea with extra dark bitter orange chocolate. It’s a fabulous afternoon treat.

Here in this recipe, I use extra dark chocolate, milk, and top with grated orange chocolate. You can, of course, use milk chocolate if you wish. Top with whipped cream, marshmallows, grated chocolate, a dusting of cocoa and any goodies that your heart desires.

Tips for Making Earl Grey Hot Chocolate

  • Tea: You can use either loose leaf tea or tea bag tea here. I love the taste of loose leaf tea but to be honest, when making hot chocolate I opt for tea bags instead. It doesn’t matter if you are using a lesser quality tea for this recipe. Strongly flavoured black tea bags work great. Use 1 tea bag per 1 heaped teaspoon of loose leaf tea.

  • Chocolate: Use either a bar of chocolate, chopped chocolate or chocolate chips. I like to break up big bar of dark chocolate as I find it melts a little easier.

  • Cocoa: It’s best to use darker dutch cocoa for a richer tasting hot chocolate but any type of cocoa or cacao will work in this recipe.

  • Sweetener: White sugar is the way to go with this recipe as it sweetens the hot chocolate without adding any extra flavours. You can alternatively use honey, agave or maple syrup if you prefer. You can also omit the sugar all together.

  • Milk: Use any milk and cream that you like including regular cow’s milk, oat, almond, soy, coconut etc…

  • Toppings: For extra decadence, top with whipped cream plus any of the following: marshmallows, chocolate sauce, melted chocolate, a dusting of cocoa, grated chocolate (I like grated orange chocolate - try using Terry’s chocolate orange yum!)
